Backend Software Engineer (Mid/Sr)

Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain backend applications using PHP (Laravel) and Node.js.
- Build scalable, secure, and maintainable RESTful APIs/backend services following clean architecture principles.
- Participate in migrating and modernizing legacy systems to modern architectures using PHP (Laravel) and Node.js.
- Design database structures and optimize SQL queries for performance and scalability.
- Integrate third-party APIs and cloud services.
- Troubleshoot and debug production issues, optimize system performance based on monitoring metrics, and continuously improve system reliability and stability.
- Participate in architecture discussions and technical decision-making.
- Write technical documentation, maintain development standards, and mentor junior developers.
- Write unit/integration tests, participate in code reviews, and ensure code quality and best practices.
- Utilize AI-assisted development tools to improve software quality, development efficiency, and engineering productivity.
- Design, build, and maintain AI Agent Skills, prompts, workflows, and reusable engineering knowledge for development teams.
- Continuously explore and adopt emerging technologies, AI-Driven Development practices, and AI-powered tools for coding, testing, debugging, and documentation to improve software quality and engineering productivity.
Qualifications
- 3+ years of backend development experience.
- Strong proficiency in PHP.
- Experience with Laravel or similar PHP frameworks.
- Good knowledge of Node.js (NestJS).
- Strong SQL knowledge.
- Experience with MySQL, PostgreSQL, or MariaDB.
- Database design and performance optimization.
- Strong understanding of: OOP, SOLID Principles, Design Patterns, Clean Code, Clean Architecture
- Experience building scalable backend systems.
- Experience writing Unit Tests, Integration Tests, and API Tests to ensure code quality.
- Experience using AI coding assistants such as GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Claude Code, Gemini CLI, or similar AI development tools.
- Ability to create, customize, and maintain AI Agent Skills, prompts, or AI workflows to improve development productivity.
- Experience with Redis, Caching, Queue/Job (Redis, SQS, RabbitMQ), Webhooks, WebSocket (pub/sub), and knowledge of NoSQL (MongoDB/DynamoDB is a plus).
- Knowledge of Docker, Linux, Nginx, basic CI/CD, observability/logging.
- Ability to read and understand technical documentation in English.
- Preference for candidates with an ownership mindset, proactive problem-solving attitude, and strong technical communication.
Preferred Qualifications
- Cloud & DevOps: AWS (EC2, RDS, S3, Lambda, ECS, CloudFront, DynamoDB, CloudWatch, VPC, ELB)
- Microservices, Event-driven architecture
- Experience working with Japanese clients.
- Experience integrating LLMs, MCP, AI Agents, or Agentic AI into software products or engineering workflows.
- GCP: Cloud Storage, Vertex, BigQuery, Cloud Run
- Ability to review architecture and standardize the codebase.
- Experience in project planning, task estimation, team coordination, and software project management is a plus.
